The Darker Side of Online Dating: Man Uses JDate to Swindle Widow Out of $100,000

Brooklyn, New York native Alan Sarner found the victim's online profile on JDate, a profile that indicated that the victim had lost her husband to leukemia. Sarner met with the victim for dinner, at which point he convinced her to invest $100,000 into his bogus company that he claimed was marketing a new technology that can treat blood diseases like leukemia. The victim invested, convinced that she could both help leukemia patients and turn a profit.

Turns out that Sarner is a just a lowlife con artist (and married.)

What's the lesson here? Be careful what you put in your profile. Best to leave out details like "my husband recently died of leukemia." You can always share those personal things once you get to know a person better.
